For example, I could have done without the chapter enumerating Christian authors from the late Roman period to Des Esseinte’s contemporaries, none of which I had ever heard of much less read. There, near the breeding ground of intellectual aberrations and diseases of the mind — the mystical tetanus, the burning fever of lust, the typhoids and yellow fevers of crime — he had found, hatching in the dismal forcing-house of ennuithe frightening climacteric of thoughts and emotions.
He builds a hothouse for monstrous, grotesque and poisonous plants and dreams of a symbolic, syphilitic plant woman. What’s interesting about that is that by taking a sympathetic but critical view of des Essientes we can see a precursor for a lot of the movements in 20th Century arts – Warhol, Bowie, etc.
It was the heyday of Naturalism, but this school, which should have rendered the inestimable service of giving us real characters in precisely described settings, had ended up harping on the same old themes and was treading water.
